SHILLONG: NPP legislator James K Sangma has questioned the policy of the State Government in promoting a police officer TC Chacko who was allegedly involved in the killing of a 60-year-old labourer, Washington Marak. “Instead of taking action, the Government is promoting the officer from the rank of Circle Inspector to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police,” James said while moving the adjournment motion in the House on Friday.
It may be recalled that during the early morning hours of January 26, 2010, police teams led by Chacko had raided Rongrekgre village near Williamnagar, across river Simsang, looking for militants.
An encounter took place with GNLA militants not far from the village who repulsed the police attack with RPGs before fleeing from the area.
The police claimed to have shot dead a militant which later turned out to be a 60-year-old villager identified as Washington N Marak. James also mentioned that the officer in charge of Ampati police station, Narul Islam, who was involved in the rape of two minor girls, was still untraced. “I strongly suspect that the police are trying to shield Islam by not locating him,” James alleged, while adding that “this is a clear indication that there is something wrong in the system”.
