SHILLONG: Bringing to an end three days of intense competition, East Khasi Hills topped the medals table at the State Level Inter School Athletic Meet at the JN Sports Complex, Polo, on Friday.

While North Garo Hills led the standings after day one and West Khasi Hills on day two, the most populated district of the state stamped their mark on the competition on the final day, ending with 12 gold, 19 silver and nine bronze medals for a total of 40.

West Jaintia Hills came second with 18 medals (9G, 5S, 4B), while WKH ended third on 27 medals (7G, 7S, 13B).

NGH eventually finished in fifth place with 16 medals (5G, 7S, 4B) behind Ri-Bhoi (6G, 13S, 7B). South West Garo Hills was the only district to finish without a medal.

Fifty-eight events were held over the course of the meet.

Although EKH bagged the Best Team titles for both the boys and girls categories, the individual awards were more evenly divided.

The Best Athlete in the U-14 boys division was Alicelang Lyngkhoi of West Khasi Hills, while the corresponding girls title went to Angelica Talang of West Jaintia Hills.

In the U-16 category, Deini Challam (EKH) and Rosemary Linza Bamon (WJH) were named Best Athletes.

Disingh Phawa (EJH, boys) and Graceful Intipi (Ri-Bhoi, girls) were the Best Athletes among the above-16s.

Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Zenith M Sangma was the chief guest at the closing ceremony, while other guests were Sports & Youth Affairs parliamentary secretary Stephanson Mukhim, Sports & Youth Affairs principal secretary P Kharkongor and Sports & Youth Affairs secretary FR Kharkongor.

The final events were the 100m and 4x100m races in the U-16 category.

The tension and concentration of the runners in the U-16 girls 4x100m was palpable as there were two false starts. However, EKH ran away with the gold medal, finishing over two seconds ahead of WKH.

The EKH boys then won the gold in their 4x100m final, pipping WJH by a narrower margin of just over half a second.
