Police find no cell phone with Champion

SHILLONG: The state police have denied the report that the GNLA supremo Champion R Sangma, who is lodged in is using cell phone with internet connection in Shillong jail.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, Prem Singh, Director General of Prisons said that a thorough internal inquiry was conducted by a senior officer to unearth the mobiles and SIM cards allegedly used by Champion Sangma, an MPDA detainee.

“During the inquiry, no unauthorized mobile phone or SIM card was found in the cell where Champion Sangma is lodged or anywhere in the premises of the Shillong jail compound,” the statement said.

Regarding the mobile numbers 8794201658 (Vodafone) and 8413055138 (Airtel),Singh said that on checking with the Vodafone and Airtel service providers to know the subscriber details of these two SIM cards it was found that none of these SIM cards is in the name of Champion Sangma. “These SIM cards are in the name of two civilians whose names can’t be shared with the public without the permission of these subscribers”, Singh said

Regarding the alleged Facebook account operated by Champion, Singh clarified that the screen shot taken from the Facebook postings belongs to a Facebook account holder in the name of “Rangbil Sangma”. The personal details of Rongbil Sangma including date of birth posted on his Facebook account do not tally with the personal details of Sangma including the date of birth.

According to DG (prisons) very strict access control mechanism is in place at the jail entrance. “No unauthorized person or material, under any circumstances, is allowed into the restricted security area of the jail compound. All the visitors are subjected to thorough frisking while allowing entry to this area to meet the jail in-mates.

“With this access control mechanism in place, Champion Sangma cannot have access to either SIM cards or to any electronic gadgets or to any other unauthorized items in to his cell”, Singh said.
