Guwahati: Union Minister of State (MoS) for Home, Khiren Rijiju arrived in Assam on Saturday to take stock of the law and order situation in the troubled state in the wake of killing of Superintendent of Police (SP) of Hamren police district in Karbi Anglong by tribal ultras on the night of Thursday in a remote location.
He is being accompanied by the Union Joint Secretary Home (in charge of Northeast), Sambhu Singh.
Arriving at the airport here  Rijiju said he had come to the state as per the suggestion of Home Minister Rajnath Singh to review the law and order situation with the state government.
He said he would discuss ways with the chief minister Tarun Gogoi who is in charge of home department, and state government officials to prevent recurrence of similar incidents in future. He said it was a great loss as an efficient police officer was killed by the militants.
He said though he was scheduled to come to the state after the Parliament session was over, the unfortunate killing of the SP and his PSO by the militants prompted him to prepone his visit as suggested by Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
“My appeal is to the ultras is: why kill your own people,” Rijiju said. From the airport, he rushed to the headquarter of the 4th Assam Police battalion to pay last respect to the slain SP of Hamren police district Nityananda Goswami and his PSO Ratul Nunisa along with Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi and top police officials and the chief secretary of Assam.
Assam police on Saturday organised an elaborate but solemn function to pay tribute to the killed SP and his PSO.
Suspected militants belonging to Karbi People’s Liberation Tiger (KPLT) killed the SP and his PSO in an ambush deep inside a forest area in Hamren sub-division of Karbi Anglong hill district.
The SP was leading a counter-insurgency operation.
