NONGPOH: Sending a straight signal of intolerance against anti-social activities against the Khasi-Pnar communities living in Block-I & II, the Karbi NGOs on Friday issued a directive to Karbi militants to henceforth stop terrorizing the Khasi Pnar communities as they will not tolerate such activities while also demanding immediate solution to the long pending border issue between Assam and Meghalaya.

This was divulged by the Advisory Board for JAC for Autonomous chairman J I Kathar (retired IAS officer) before media persons after the meeting between the Karbi NGOs comprising of KSA, AMKSA, Karbi Anglong Students Youth Council, Karbi Anglong Unemployed Youth Association and Karbi Anglong Indigenous Youth Association and the KSU Central Body, KSU North Khasi Hills and KSU Jaintia Hills district and villagers leaders from Block-I and Block-II.

The meeting was held at KSU North Khasi Hills District’s office at Mawdiangum under Nongpoh PS on Saturday afternoon. The prominent NGOs leaders of the Karbi NGOs are KSA president Bidya Singh Teron, vice chairman for Karbi Anglong Peace Forum Pankaj Teron, KAYA secretary Roshan Teron while the KSU team was led by education secretary central body Donald V Thabah, asst secretary Rudy Lyngdoh, North Khasi Hill District unit president F K Kharkamni Tron and Jaiñtia Hills District Unit president Ohio Suting.

Kathar said, “We are a community who does not support any form of crimes against the people especially murder and extortion demands. This is an attempt by Karbi outfits to break the cordial relationship between the Khasi Pnar and the Karbi communities.”

He also said that the Karbi NGOs from Karbi Anglong district from time to time reminded the Assam Government and the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council for resolving the border dispute between Assam and Meghalaya so as to avoid any communal flares between the two communities as some anti-social elements are taking undue advantages of the situation.

The bureaucrat turned autonomous state leader lamented that Karbi Anglong district is far behind in terms of development and infrastructure due to the apathy treatment of the Assam government towards and “we are yet to receive our rights as enlisted in the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.”

Kathar clarified that the militants who claimed to Karbi and indulged in terrorizing the Khasi-Pnar communities actually belonged to some other communities with bad intentions of making the Khasi Pnar and Karbi fight among themselves.

Meanwhile, KSU Central Body education secretary Donald V

Thabah informed, “We will be meeting the KAAC chief executive member and exhort upon him to stop the infringement of the council in Block-I and Block-II.”

He further said that the KSU and the Karbi NGOs will jointly conduct inspection of areas under Block-I and Block-II in order to speak out against terrors committed by the Karbi militants and also to strengthen the relationship between the two communities.

The KSU Central Body leader said that the meeting strongly urged upon the Meghalaya and the Assam government to immediately resolve the border dispute without any further delay.
