Junior Reds get off to winning start

SHILLONG: Shillong Lajong FC opened their campaign in the U-19 Shillong Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Malki SC in the first match of the tournament at the JN Stadium, Polo, on Monday.

The junior Reds opened the scoring in the 22nd minute through SS Sohktung, but his effort was neutralised by B Sohtung of Malki six minutes later.

The two teams went into the break 1-1 and Lajong had to wait until the 54th minute for the winning goal, scored by FR Pachuan, who neatly headed in the ball following a cross from deep on the right flank.

Most of the match was played in Malki’s half as they had to withstand numerous attacks while created only a few chances of their own in the second half.

Tuesday’s game will see defending champions Nangkiew Irat play Royal Wahingdoh FC at 4:15pm.
