JOWAI: The 24-hour and 12-hour bandh called by the HNLC in protest against the NGT ban on rat hole coal mining and the JSU in protest against the government failure to set up a blood bank in Jowai has badly affected the normal life of the people in the district.
The 24-hour HNLC bandh passed off peacefully with major support from the people of Jaintia Hills particularly the mineral rich East Jaintia Hills District.
The 12-hour bandh sponsored by the JSU on Thursday also passed off peacefully. During the bandh, all business activities in both East and West Jainita HIlls were shut down. Market places, shops and educational educational institutions failed to function.
However, according to official reports from both East and West Jaintia Hills, an overall attendance in government offices was recorded at around 55 percent in East Jaintia Hills and 85.6 percent in West Jaintia Hills.
