SHILLONG: Shillong MP Vincent H Pala has urged the Centre to start a new 24-hour Doordarshan channel from Shillong.

“This is indeed a long term demand of the people of my state. It is imperative that the 24-hour channel should portray all the three major ethnic communities namely Khasi Jaintia and Garo in equal measure in addition to English programming which can reach out to the large cosmopolitan population of Shillong ,” Pala said in a letter to Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar on Friday.

He said that the terrestrial transmission originated from DDK Shillong and DDK Tura do not reach homes in clear quality with plenty of video and audio distortions.

According to him, highlighting of the important flagship programmes of the centre and the state in addition to dissemination of information on helping the citizens to avail various governmental welfare schemes in education, health , agriculture and allied sector can go a long way in fulfilling the role of the public broadcaster.
