NONGPOH: In what could be termed as Divine protection, an elderly man narrowly escaped from being crushed to death after a cemented wall of the building adjacent to his rented house collapsed and fell down in his rooftop.

The incident occurred at Nongpoh on Monday morning, when the wall of a building belonging to one Bibi Kurbah collapsed at the rooftop of SP Joshi who is the owner of Ganesh Bhandar restaurant. Joshi who was in deep sleep woke up only due to the impact of the incident but there was little that he could do as he sustained severe injuries in his head, hand, cheek and legs.

Later, Joshi was rushed to Nongpoh Civil hospital for medical treatment but due to the severity of his injuries he was immediately referred to Guwahati for better treatment.

A visit to the place revealed that there was gross negligence on the construction of the building as the foundation of the building was a weak one and it was constructed in a hazardous manner thereby posing threat to the residents and buildings adjacent to it.

Regarding the construction of building, the local people raised eyebrow and also raised questions over the functioning of the government from the department of the Disaster Management, PWD and the Municipal who failed to check on the construction of the multistoried building.
