‘Meditation the key to bust stress’

SHILLONG: A seminar on “Heart is what our mind is – Health is in our mind” was organised by the Department of Cardiology at North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) recently wherein Dr. SK Sahu from Global Hospital and Research Centre, Mount Abu, Gujarat made a presentation in various aspects of mind and body connection.

Dr Sahu stressed on the rising stresses in the contemporary world and informed that 60 per cent of all the diseases have its origin in the mind and in fact stress may be even more dangerous than other life style patterns like smoking etc.

“Meditation is the best medicine to bust the stress and to prevent the rising menace of life style diseases like heart attacks, diabetes, hypertension etc,” he said.

PK Swain, Head of the Postal Services, North East Region emphasized on various mechanisms by which mind and body are connected while Dr. Animesh Mishra, Head of the Department of Cardiology stressed on the inequities in the non material goods like spirituality, nature etc. are as bad a social evil as the rise in equalities in the material goods.

“The mantra to dispel these inequalities in the internal development of human kind through spiritual means,” he said.

North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences Dean, Dr Vandana Raphael and principal of the nursing college Catherine shared their views on the relevance of such seminars for the prevention of non communicable diseases.
