CM urges youths to pursue law as career

SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has urged the youths to take up legal studies as a career option in order to contribute towards effective legal system in the State.

Addressing the gathering during the inauguration of the Court of District and Sessions Judge at Williamnagar on Friday, Sangma emphasized upon the importance of the complete separation of judiciary from the executive which according to him would help create conducive atmosphere for the justice delivery system.

Terming the occasion as a historic one, Sangma said that it is for the State Government to ensure that the provision as enshrined in the Constitution of the country is fulfilled.

He further said that the District and Sessions Court will ensure access to equal opportunities and will also facilitate expeditious administration of justice in the district.

While stressing on the need to create awareness about the legal system among people, Sangma said that it is very important that the people are made aware of their rights and it is imperative upon the Government to sensitize the people and reach out to all the stakeholders.

The Chief Minister also said that his Government will put efforts to ensure that all the remaining districts have their own Court of District and Session Judge in the near future.

Chief Justice of High Court of Meghalaya, Justice Prafulla C Pant said that with the establishment of the new Court of District and Sessions Judge, Williamnagar will now have its own functional court which will help in speedy disposal of pending cases.

Deputy Chief Minister in charge-law Rowell Lyngdoh, East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vijay Kumar Mantri, and Law Secretary L M Sangma, also spoke on the occasion.
