MUDA permission for high-rises -right, left and centre

This is a picture of a six-storied building owned by a businessman from Mawiong and is located at Motinagar. If this house should collapse, the neighbours surrounding the building will be buried inside the debris.

There is no one to take a call as to whether this building supposedly for residential purposes is earthquake-resistant. The number of residents in this building will be phenomenal.

Where is the water supply going to come from? Can a locality allow such a housing complex without considering all the pros and cons of how such a huge number of residents can be accommodated?

What about the sanitation part?

Where will the sewage be filtered to considering the landowner has built on every inch of available space?

Is this the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority’s way of regulating the height and feasibility of residential or business complexes?

Or is permission granted when money changes hands ‘over the table?’

And what is the Dorbar Shnong doing by the way? Should some concerned citizens not approach a court of law for this monstrosity? And we wonder why the rains are playing truant!

Champion Sangma’s Facebook page

When this paper carried a story that Champion Sangma uses a smart phone and is an active Facebooker, the jail authorities were quick to issue a rejoinder probably even before they had checked the GNLA Chairman’s cell and person and before keeping a watch on his daily activities.

On June 24 last when Champion was brought to the District Court for a hearing he had a photograph taken with his lawyer Sujit Dey just before entering the Courtroom and immediately posted it on his wall.

The Facebook account is naturally not in his name but in that of Kasan Sangma. The lengthy posts on a daily basis have many young readers who access the page and also post their comments. Unfortunately he addresses only the Garo audience.

It must be cushy to be in jail and also enjoy all the facilities of a VIP! No wonder there are so many candidates waiting to join the GNLA while the state is left twiddling its thumbs and singing peace tunes!
