SHILLONG: Two youths were mercilessly beaten up by some Army jawans at 101 Area near Mahadev Khola temple on Monday night.
Eyewitnesses, while claiming that the jawans had used rifle butts to assault two persons, said, “Whatever mistake the youths must have committed they should not have been assaulted in such a manner.”
When contacted, Jhalupara Police Outpost denied having received any complaint in this regard.
Meanwhile, Defence PRO Amit Mahajan explained that seven youths in a drunken state who were riding on three motorcycles wanted to enter through the Rilbong Army gate. When they were denied entry they again tried to enter through the Gate at Mahadev Khola and even manhandled a sentry on duty, the PRO claimed, adding other jawans were called in who caught two of the youths while the others managed to flee.
A police complaint was lodged and the two youths were handed over to the police, the PRO added.
Incidentally, the Army jawans who were on a rampage also twisted the key of a vehicle of The Shillong Times, which happened to be at the spot at that time
