Editor,

Apropos Rangdajeid Marwein’s letter ‘New thinking post NGT Ban’ ( ST June 30, 2104) it is always refreshing to read the thoughts of educated young people, especially those who apply their minds to the issues they wish to address. In this case this young man has more or less called for ‘out of the box’ solutions to the problems raised by the NGT ban. He has rightly asked society and Government to move beyond concern for the ‘few mine owners’ and concentrate instead on the plight of society as a whole. A refreshing, practical and optimistic approach to the problem. I hope people listen.

A question arises. Who created this problem in the first place? It’s the visionless, opportunistic and sheer speculative approach adopted by our leaders. These are the people responsible. It is the people of my generation. People already in their 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. People well past their ability to even think who has sold Meghalaya to the highest bidder. They are the people responsible for most of our current woes. Now we turn to these same people for solutions to problems that they created. It’s sheer nonsense. It simply shows how foolish we are.

Answers and solutions to this generation’s problems will not come from old political frogs. Forget them. They do not even deserve the respect of the youth. The solutions that the young generation are looking for will only come from leaders of their own generation and stop looking to selfish politicians of my generation for answers for they have no answers. The youth of Meghalaya should start identifying young educated leaders with vision; leaders who don’t ride on jingoism and the “Jaitbynriew Hynniewtrep bandwagon” to mislead the gullible. They are the answer to the future of our state.

No fair competition this!

Editor,

Apropos the news item ” Ad hoc, temporary appointments barred ” (ST 26th June 2014), the circular of the state government cautioning all government offices to refrain from making back door appointments is a repetition of many other previous circulars of similar of a nature. Hence it is an exercise in futility since no stern action was ever taken against defaulters. This lack of action obviously stems from the fact that the responsible people who devised the appointment policy which led to framing of relevant rules, themselves break those rules by being parties to such irregular appointments. But are those in the MPSC and in the various District Selection Committees really sincere in ensuring that there is no partisan approach while selecting people for the various posts in the Government? Doubtful, since the members in these institutions are all political appointees. For instance, it is learnt that the West Jaintia Hills District Selection Committee where all the members are political appointees is dominantly influenced by Dr RC Laloo, the local MLA and Deputy Chief Minister and it is rumoured that the selection of any candidate by the Committee should be only on his say so. The Deputy Commissioner of the District who is the Chairman of the committee is a mere figurehead there.

To many, it seems highly improbable that Dr RC Laloo who is highly qualified and is a very senior politician and also the Minister of Education would not encourage open competition amongst the youth. But the recent report relating to admission to Pine Mount School this year where the file unnecessarily went all the way to him and was in his custody for quite some time would lead many to doubt his intentions and sincerity. Again as reported , he is also one of the Ministers who made many recommendations for appointment of primary school teachers who were later affected by the Education Scam. Through such actions on his part it can be concluded that what is rumored in Jowai all along is nothing short of the truth. If a leader of his stature and many other leaders misuse their power in influencing employment institutions just to gain political mileage there will never be a fair competition process in the state government. No wonder there is growing frustration of our youth everywhere

Yours etc.,

K. Dkhar,
