Three injured in grenade blasts

Bijni: Three persons were on Sunday injured when some unidentified youths lobbed grenades in Bijni town in Assam’s Chirang district, police said. Motorcycle borne youths lobbed a grenade near Bolanguri bus stand at Kuklun Road area of Bijni town critically injuring three persons working in a garage nearby. In another incident within a few minutes of the first, another grenade exploded near No 2 Bhetgaon area of the town but nobody was injured in the explosion. The injured, identified as Palan Mandal, Sujannam Das and Sujan Arya, have been hospitalised in a critical condition. A massive search operation has been launched to nab the culprits. Chirang Superintendent of Police Ranjan Bhuyan and senior civil officials of the district administration rushed to the spot and reviewed the situation. (PTI)

Slow Loris released in the wild by Arunachal forest dept

Itanagar: Forest officials of the Pasighat Forest Division in East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh has released a Slow Loris into the wild which was rescued by member of an NGO. The endangered species of the primate was released on Saturday after it was rescued by a member of the Daying Ering Wildlife Foundation Eco-Development Society (DEWFEDS) from PI Line area at Pasighat on Friday last, DFO Tabang Jamoh said on Sunday. The animal, locally called ‘Besung Raye’ in Adi, was released in the Pasighat Reserve Forest in presence of NGO members and the Range Forest Officer (RFO) Osar Gao. Earlier, four such animals were released in the reserve forest, Gao added. (PTI)

PMEGP forms up for sale in DIC: ZYTO

Kohima: The anti-corruption team of Zunheboto Town Youth Organisation (ZTYO) in Nagaland has alleged malpractices in distribution of forms for the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) by the District Industries and Commerce (DIC) in Zunheboto district. On receiving several complaints, the ZTYO had constituted a team to look into the matter, a press release issued by the organisation’s media cell stated here on Sunday. The team found that out of 200 application forms allotted to the Zunheboto district, only 151 were issued and the remaining were allegedly taken by the VIPs, ministers and MLAs, the release said. Despite that the forms were for free distribution, the ZYTO pointed out the forms were sold at Rs 200 at the DIC Zunheboto and even for Rs 1,500 outside the office. The organisation has urged the authorities, including the Directorate of Industries and Commerce and District Industries and Commerce (DIC) Zunheboto to cancel the 200 forms and re-issue new ones, and also warned of further agitation against the malpractices. Congress reconstitutes Sikkim unit

New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi Saturday reconstituted the Sikkim unit by appointing 10 new vice presidents, her office said. “Sonia Gandhi has appointed 10 people as vice president for Pradesh Congress Committee in Sikkim. They are M.D. Joshi, L.M. Subba, D.B. Karki, M.B. Rai, Dorjee Wangdi Bhutia, Topden Lepcha, K.B. Rai, Kinlay Gyaltsen Bhutia, R.N. Shakya and Man Maya Subba,” her office said. The committee also got 10 new general secretaries – Padam Chettri, T.K. Pradhan, S.T. Bhutia, A.S. Subba, C.K. Rai, Gyalpo Tamang, O.P. Bista, Gopal Chettri, Ishwar Prasad Rai and Penzong Lepcha. S.B. Gurung has been made the treasurer. (IANS)

Three arrested on molestation charge

Guwahati: Three persons were arrested on Saturday in connection with an alleged molestation attempt on a university student on board a mini bus in the state capital, police said. Guwahati Senior Superintendent of Police Anand Praksh Tiwari said the alleged incident took place on July 2 when the student of Gauhati University was going to her hometown, Morigaon. “She has alleged that three persons tried to molest her. However, investigation revealed that it was her fear that the trio would molest her and so she jumped off the running vehicle and got injured,” Tiwari told PTI. Police have arrested three persons, including the driver of the vehicle, in connection with the case, the SSP said. According to an FIR filed by the girl’s father, three persons tried to molest her on the bus. The incident has fuelled protests during the day on Gauhati University campus. The protesting students demanded immediate action against the accused. (PTI)

4th North-East Angling Competition to be held on July 13

Nagaon: The 4th North-East angling competition which is being organized by the Jasingfaa Aqua Tourism Resort of Mahrul, Dimaruguri, Nagaon in Assam will be held on July 13. The resort has been organizing the competition, in commemoration of the National Fish Farmers’ Day on 10th July since 2011. Motivatred by the previous three event’s grand success and equally overwhelming demand of the anglers from across the state during first two years, the management of Jasingfaa has decided to incorporate the anglers of the other North Eastern states from last year. Therefore, the scope of the competition had been extended in order to incorporate all the anglers from the entire North Eastern region and hence has now been declared as the “North East Angling Competition”. The management committee also has apprised that there will be three prizes on the basis of the highest number of fishes caught by the anglers. Apart from this, there will be a special prize for the biggest catch. The Director of Fisheries, Government of Assam and Director of Fisheries, Government of Arunachal Pradesh will be presiding over the occasion. The competition will begin at 10am following its inauguration at 9.30am and will break for lunch at 1.30am. The prizes will be distributed to the respective winners on the same day at 4.30pm.
