Guwahati: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Monday held a state-wide ‘Satyagraha’ to urge the BJP led government at the Centre to resolve the issue of illegal influx from Bangaladesh and not to start construction on Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project. AASU members took out processions and organised dharnas in all district and sub-divisional headquarters across the state highlighting their various demands. There was, however, no untoward incident reported from any part of the state, police said. AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya said restarting work at the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric site before the submission of the expert committee’s final report would go against the interest of the indigenous people and the state. The BJP government at the Centre should also ensure that the issue of illegal infiltration from Bangladesh is resolved, as was promised by the BJP before the elections, he said. Bhattacharya also said that the Centre should clarify its stand on the issue of border fencing, land-swap deal with Bangladesh and visa-related issues of Bangladeshis entering the state. AASU would also organise a human chain on July 12 to highlight problems of the state. (PTI)
