Former Bihar minister’s son lynched for stealing car
Patna: A mob beat up a former Bihar minister’s son to death Sunday, allegedly for stealing a car, police said. Rajeev Kumar Sahni, former minister Ramashray Sahni’s son, was caught allegedly stealing a car at Asnichak near Dalsingh Sarai in Samastipur, a district police official said. “Sahni was beaten to death after getting caught while stealing a car,” the official said. He was allegedly arrested for stealing vehicles in the past as well. (IANS)
Treat juveniles accused of rape on par with adults: Minister
Chennai: Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi on Sunday favoured treating juveniles accused of heinous crimes like rape on par with adult offenders. Speaking to reporters here, she said according to the police, 50 per cent of all sexual crimes were committed by “16-year-olds who know the Juvenile Justice Act so they can do it.” “But now for premeditated murder, rape, if we bring them into the purview of the adult world, then it will scare them,” she said. Former WCD Minister Krishna Tirath during the previous UPA regime had proposed that juveniles above 16 years guilty of heinous crimes be treated on par with adult offenders. The move was however opposed by various NGOs and National Commission of Protection of Child Rights which stated that such a proposal was against child rights. (PTI)
Seven pilgrims from MP killed, over 20 injured in bus mishap
Auriya (UP): Seven persons were killed and over 20 others injured when a bus carrying pilgrims from Madhya Pradesh overturned in Sahayal area here, police said on Sunday. The incident occurred late Saturday night when the bus carrying pilgrims from Lahar town in Bhind area of Madhya Pradesh overturned near Sauthara, about 180 km from Lucknow, killing seven passengers, including two children, it said. Police said over 20 passengers were injured in the accident and were admitted to community health centre at Dibiyapur and the district hospital here. The pilgrims were returning to Madhya Pradesh from Tirva in Kannauj district when the mishap occurred. Superintendent of Police Akhilesh Kumar said around 60 pilgrims were travelling in the bus. Five killed in lightning strikes
Burdwan (WB): Five persons were killed and two others sustained burn injuries in lightning strikes in Burdwan district on Sunday even as the wife of one of the deceased allegedly tried to commit suicide after seeing his body. Superintendent of Police S M H Mirza said lightning struck in three localities of Raina and Jamalpur police station areas while it was raining there. All the victims were working in agricultural lands. Harisadhan Pandit (35) was killed and another person was injured in a lightning strike at Ausara village in Raina. Pandit’s wife was also working in a field nearby. After seeing that her husband was dead, she allegedly consumed poison and is currently admitted in Burdwan Medical College Hospital, Mirza said. Lightning also struck at Dhuluk and Panchra villages under Jamalpur police station killing two persons in each of the areas. Jishu Hansda (15) and Dipu Kisku (20) died and another one was injured in Dhuluk, while Anil Malik (65) and Sukumar Khetrapal (26) were killed in Panchra, Mirza said. (PTI)
Over 1,300 infants die in Kalawati Hospital in a year
New Delhi: More than 1,300 infants have died in the Kalawati Saran Children Hospital here during the last one year, according to an RTI query. In one year, from January 2013-2014, 1,345 infants have died due to diseases like Diarrhea, Tuberculosis, Tetanus, and Encephalitis. Out of 1,345, 92 lost their lives in January last year, 87 in February, 78 in March, 87 in April, 115 in May, 77 in June, 85 in July, 159 in August, 113 in September, 136 in October, 154 in November, and 67 in December. 75 children died in January this year. The query also said that similarly more than three infants have been dying in the government-run hospital daily. According to the query, the department of pediatrics and nanotechnology in the hospital suffer from paucity of ventilators with only two out of five of them working in the pediatrics and and four out of six in the latter. Various common causes for deaths in Kalawati Hospital are Diarrhea, Tuberculosis, Tetanus, Encephalitis, Anemia, Malnutrition, Pneumonia, and Neonatal Sepsis. It is also known that out of the total number of children admitted in the hospital, many suffer from acute bronchitis and bronchitis. (PTI)
