HILLONG: Residents of Silkata village in West Garo Hills District on Monday while protesting against the Block Development Officer (BDO) for paying them two days of wages despite employing them for 14 days under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), have threatened to approach the court for redressal of their grievance.

It is learnt that at least 350 job card holders have come together to protest against the key functionaries of the Village Employment Council (VEC) and a Gram Sevak in Silkata village.

The villagers have also filed a complaint with Selsella BDO D. Roy in this connection.

When contacted, the BDO said that an inquiry into the matter was conducted by his officers and the report has been submitted to the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner.

He, further, suspected that the issue is being raised for political reasons.

“What I came to know is that ten people took their wages for eight days and when the VEC was making the payment for the remaining work days they did not accept the wages,” the BDO said.

The BDO, further, informed that the Deputy Commissioner will go over the report once he returns to the district
