TURA: Villagers lynched to death three extortionists who tried to create terror and extort money from them on Monday night in remote Jambal village under Rongjeng police station.

The matter was reported to police only on Tuesday morning.

“We have been informed that a group of dacoits tried to extort money from the villagers on Monday night by threatening them with small weapons. The angry villagers retaliated by attacking them and three were killed while the rest fled,” informed district police chief Davis Nestell R Marak from Williamnagar.

The unidentified men had descended on the village in the evening and demanded that the villagers pay them tax. They had threatened some of the elders with pistols and when the mob of people decided to oppose them the dacoits reportedly opened fire in the air to scare them off.

However, the public refused to be cowed down and instead charged at them. Three of the extortionists were caught and beaten to death while the rest of the gang fled for their lives.

Police teams from Rongjeng have since left for the site to retrieve the bodies when reports last came in.
