Tripura panchayat elections underway

Agartala: Elections for the three-tier panchayat system in Tripura are underway, the State Election Commission said on Tuesday.
The elections are being held for the 5,624 seats, including 381 seats for panchayat samitis, 114 for four zila parishads, and the rest 5,329 seats for gram panchayats, State Election Commissioner Y Kumar said.
Altogether 11,08,100 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in the Panchayat elections.
Adequate security arrangements were made with deployment of more than 12,000 police and paramilitary forces, Kumar said, adding, no untoward incident has been reported till the time this report was filed.
BSF personnel are also deployed in the villages adjoining the border areas, he added. (PTI)
