SHILLONG: After raising lot of hue and cry over the alleged politician-militant nexus in Garo Hills and especially targeting the Chief Minister, the Opposition is now a silent lot with no word from the Centre on any probe into the matter.

Moreover, despite promises, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, failed to turn up in the State to assess the ground reality.

The Opposition members had, last month, camped in two groups in Delhi where they met Rijiju and raised several issues concerning the State including the politico-militant nexus and the failed state of law and order in Garo Hills. There was no statement from the Opposition on whether they met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their stay in Delhi.

Sources, however, confirmed that the Opposition team failed to get an audience with either the Home Minister or the Prime Minister.

Though Rijiju had assured the Opposition that he would visit Garo Hills in the first week of July, it did not materialize.

Incidentally, Rijiju visited some other Northeastern states but skipped Meghalaya.

Other than sending security forces, Delhi did not send any Union Home Ministry delegation to Garo Hills to assess the ground reality in the wake of spurt in militant activities. Sources said that like the way the Opposition delegation sent a fact-finding team to understand various aspects of the Myntdu-Leshka Hydel Project and the power scenario in the State, the Opposition should have deputed another team to Garo Hills to assess the law and order situation and give constructive suggestions to the State Government.
