Inability to accomodate hundreds of aspiring students

TURA: The Tura Government College Students’ Union (TGCSU) has blamed the inaction of the State Government to provide better infrastructure for the college’s failure to accommodate several hundreds of aspiring students who applied for admissions.

The TGCSU informed that although a letter was submitted to the Director of Higher and Technical Education regarding the problem there were still more than 548 students who were yet to get into the college due to the college authority’s refusal to admit them citing various problems of the college.

“It is a fact that our college lacks good infrastructure, teaching and non- teaching staffs due to which the college authority may face problem to accommodate the huge number of students, but why has the Government not fulfilled our demands earlier? If the government would have been concerned about the students of Garo Hills and fulfilled our demands then such kind of problems would not have arisen. We have submitted the memorandum a long time back and also sent reminders many times, but till date there is no visible result and consequently the college is facing the current situation,” the TGCSU Secretary, Literary & Magazine, Dikki N Marak said.

Marak informed that the union’s General Secretary, Balkarin Ch Marak had earlier dispatched a letter and also personally met the Directorate of Higher and Technical Education on behalf of the TGCSU where he was assured by the authority that the students would be allowed to take admission in the college. He lamented that the assurance given at the time came to nothing as the students were found waiting for the admission process to begin.

“How much longer are the students to wait? If they are not able to attend classes till now then when are they going to attend the same and prepare for the examination? Every year due to such delay of admission process the students of our college are not getting enough time to prepare for the examinations resulting in the failure of many,” Marak said.

Expressing concern that many of the students would be forced to drop out from their studies if opportunities are not provided by the government Marak on behalf of the affected students has appealed to the Meghalaya Government to act failing which it warned that the TGCSU would be compelled to issue an ultimatum and take future course of action.
