Statistics reveal over 1500 individuals addicted to drugs

SHILLONG: The State police is concerned over the growing number of drugs users in Shillong city and as per police there are approximately 1500 people in Shillong who are addicted to drugs and alcohol.

Speaking to media persons, SP (City) Vivek Syiem admitted that drugs are a big factor in the increase of crimes being reported in the city.

It is learnt that the most common drug being consumed is heroin which is smuggled into the State from the Indo-Myanmar border.

According to Syiem, most of the drug users are in the age group of 20s and are adolescent and they basically get addicted to drugs after they start consuming the same from an early age.

However, a number of drugs seizures have been made in the city after the Anti Narcotic Task Force was constituted by the Shillong police.

“We are trying our best to see that the drugs cases are charge-sheeted and convicted,” Syiem said while lauding the efforts of the community in helping police to detect such drugs cases. He also asked people to come forward and inform them about any such instances related to drugs even as he promised that the identity of the informer will not be disclosed.

He further advised people to differentiate between a drug user and a drug peddler even as he asked people not to beat any drug user.
