Kohima: Taking over the gubernatorial assignment of Nagaland, Governor P B Acharya has called for peace, “essential for all round development of the state” and said peace can be achieved only when there is “unity in diversity”.

The new Governor expressed ‘sincere hope’ that the government may live up to the aspirations of the people and fulfil its duties and responsibilities.

Asserting to uphold the highest traditions of the office and work for the principles that are sacred to democratic values, the Governor said, “Our actions must be result oriented and purposeful.” Acharya was speaking at a reception hosted by the state government at State Banquet Hall here on Saturday night.

Acharya, who had been in the state on several occasions with political engagements as BJP leader in-charge of North East, said “Nagaland is not only blessed with natural beauty of the landscape but also natural resources such as oil, coal, limestone and forest products etc.” He said “peace is essential for all round development of the state and without peace, no society can progress.”

Maintaining that peace requires understanding and appreciation of differences, the Governor said peace can only be achieved when there is unity in diversity. Nagaland is peopled by diverse tribes and hence, it is in its diversity that unity can be achieved and a bond made of trust and brotherhood, he said. Such a fellowship rooted in diversity is the strongest of bonds and it is only then that true peace can be achieved for the betterment of the state, Acharya said.

Vital role of Governor expected in solving Naga issue: CM

Nagaland Chief Minister T R Zeliang has expressed hope that the new Governor P B Acharya will play a vital role in helping the Centre and the NSCN(IM) arrive at a mutually acceptable solution to the six-decade old vexed Naga problem.

Besides, Nagaland is a resource scarce state and the only option is to generate own resources through exploration of its minerals, Zeliang said while welcoming the new Governor at a reception here last evening. “We have accordingly made our own state legal framework for exploiting petroleum and natural gas and requested the Centre to support our framework,” he said.

“The government wants to enact such legal frameworks in respect of other mineral resources including coal,” he said. Highlighting the “precarious financial crunch” of the state, Zeliang said “we are expecting much from the friendly government at the Centre under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has renewed hope for a new and vibrant India.” (PTI)
