Public meeting called against NGT ban

SHILLONG: The State Co-ordination Committee of Coal Owners, Miners & Dealers Forum (SCCCOMDF) will hold a public meeting on July 26 at Iew Nongjri at Borsora at 12 noon.

This meeting will be hosted by the Meghalaya Mine Owners & Exporters Association (MMOEA) and in this meeting, cutting across party lines, MLAs, and MDCs from across the political spectrum as well as Rangbah Shnongs, village elders and people involved in the coal business from all over the state are expected to attend.

The meeting will solely focus on issues pertaining to the ban imposed by the National Green Tribunal on rat-hole coal mining in the Meghalaya.

SCCCOMDF Secretary M Kharkongor said that the forum had filed a petition on July 7 and it was listed at the NGT Court (Principal Bench) at New Delhi on Wednesday.

He said that this application sought for permission to transport coal already mined and the NGT was pleased to issue notice on the submission and have fixed the date for hearing and disposal of the matter on August 1 at the NGT Shillong Bench.
