Guwahati: Indefinite curfew was clamped in the troubled Baksa district of Bodoland Territorial Autonomous District Council (BTC) areas of Assam on Thursday following the killing of a youth leader, Manoj Das, of Asom Sena by unidentified gunmen on Wednesday evening at Mushalpur area.
Tension prevailed in Musalpur area where police and paramilitary forces had to resort to lathi-charge and blank fire to control a mob of protestors who tried to take out a procession with the body of the slain person demanding arrest of the killers within 48 hours.
At least 20 persons were injured in the police action.
The Army was also put on alert following the unrest.
Police informed that, unidentified miscreants had fired at the youth, Manoj Das while he was on his way back to his residence along with his ill father and a few friends from a local pharmacy, where they had come to administer saline to the victim’s father.
Grievously injured Manoj Das was immediately taken to Nalbari Civil Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday night.
Manoj Das was a supporter of A- Boro Suraksha Samittee and also the secretary of Baksa district VDP Committee.
Police recovered four empty rounds and one live ammunition of 9mm from the place where the incident occurred.
Police and the paramilitary forces have launched an operation in the district to apprehend the culprits involved in the murder.
IGP, law and order, SN Singh, is also camping at Mashalpur to supervise the operation.
Tension has been running high on Baksa district due to conflicts enraging between Bodos and non-Bodos in the aftermath of Lok Sabha polls where a non-Bodo candidate, Hira Sarania, emerged winner defeating all the three influential Bodo candidates in the fray in Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency.
Recently four persons from a minority community were abducted and killed by the militants from National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Sangbijit faction) in Baksa district.
