BSF seizes forest wood

SHILLONG: BSF troops deployed in South Garo Hills  seized 437.73 cubic feet of Sal wood worth Rs 13,15,275 on the international border while it was being smuggled from the area around Baghmara, to Bangladesh.
The BSF said that the rivers flowing towards Bangladesh are used for smuggling of forest wood and it is said that the timber wood, in the form of logs, are dropped in the rivers with identification marks, and are collected in Bangladesh.
The seized items have been handed over to the forest department for further disposal.
In the last few months, BSF troops on the Meghalaya  frontier  have seized 2,189.71 cubic feet of timber worth Rs 31,54,838.
On the international border of Meghalaya state, the estimated cost of the wood in the international market is more than Rs 1 crore.
