TURA: Meghalaya police service officer JFK Marak was awarded the CRPF DGP’s commendation disc and certificate for his outstanding contribution to counter-insurgency operations in the Garo Hills where he came close to nabbing the elusive GNLA chief Sohan D Shira on several occasions.
The award ceremony took place at the CRPF Group centre in Guwahati on Sunday in which the Inspector General of CRPF for the North East, PK Singh, gave away the commendation honours to Marak in the presence of top CRPF and state police officers.
Marak is currently the SP of North Garo Hills district.
His success story against GNLA was scripted during his long tenure as the SP of East Garo Hills where the militant group has a strong base with jungle camps in the Durama Hills range.
In several operations, police commandos under Marak’s supervision had success stories against militants and dacoits alike, killing several senior and hardcore militants and apprehending many more.
The elusive GNLA chief Shira had several narrow escapes from police during counter-insurgency operations supervised by Marak as the district SP.
