Govt to seek fund for hawkers’ settlement

SHILLONG: Seeking a permanent solution to the perennial problem of hawkers, the State government will move the Centre seeking grant to relocate them to a new place.

Indicating this here on Sunday, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said that the Supreme Court has mandated that the hawkers must be provided with space and Government is trying hard to get grants.

“We are looking for a permanent solution to this perennial problem,” Lyngdoh said.

Stating that the draft of the hawkers policy has been prepared, she informed that the Government has allocated 23 locations to hawkers in Tura.

Meanwhile, some hawkers in city on Sunday said that the police have advised them not to open their shops for atleast for a week stating unwanted elements might create law and order problem.

Attack condemned: Meanwhile, the Jaintia Tribal Traders Association and All Jaintia Youth Welfare Organization in separate statements have condemned the attack on the KHADC law enforcers and media persons in Shillong.

“This is nothing but discrimination against tribal people in Meghalaya”, they alleged.

The organizations urged the State Government to take action against the perpetrators of the crime.
