Fishermen hold indefinite relay fast
Puducherry: Fishermen and mechanised fishing vessel owners here today struck work and resorted to an indefinite relay fast to press their demands. They were demanding immediate steps from the government to dredge the estuary which would ensure the safe passage of then fishing vessels. Presently because of the shallow nature of the estuary, frequent accidents were taking place and the boat owners were losing their boats which hit against the boulders, he said. Every day ten fishermen will resort to the fast at the Thengaithittu fishing harbour, till the government initiate action. (UNI)
Heavy container kills two in Thane; angry villagers run amok
Thane: Irate villagers damaged several vehicles in Murbad here on Monday when they ran amok over an accident at Shivla Phata, which claimed two lives, police said. According to police, the accident took place around 8AM when the goods on a Murbad-bound heavily loaded container brushed against a jeep with passengers on board at a village near Tokawade. As a result, the jeep lost its balance and dashed against a MSRTC bus coming from the opposite direction. Two jeep occupants from Eklahare and Manivali village were killed on the spot. However, they have not been identified yet. Furious villagers then gathered on the spot and smashed several vehicles including the big container and tried to set it afire, Murbad MLA Kisan Kathore, who rushed to the scene after the mishap, told PTI. AAP members held for defacing public property, Kejriwal targets BJP
New Delhi: Four members of Aam Aadmi Party were arrested on Monday for defacement of public property in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area. Police said the members- Rajesh Kumar, Gulshan, Deepak and Rajinder Kumar – all aged between 20-30 years- were found pasting posters at restricted places early on Monday for the rally scheduled August 3 at Jantar Mantar. “They were taken to the police station by the patrolling team and put under arrest,” a police officer said. AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal lashed out at the police, tweeting “Police found these posters ‘objectionable’ and arrested four AAP volunteers. BJP nervous and misusing police?” The four activists were booked under various sections of the Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Property Act, 2007. (UNI)
78 affected,14 hospitalised with cholera symptoms
Midnapur: At least fourteen people were hospitalised and 78, including children, affected with cholera symptoms in West Midnapur’s Tatarpur village, a medical officer said on Monday. Official sources said the disease spread following leakage of piped water and contamination of ponds. The village has a population of 2124 people. West Midnapur district CMOH Dilip Chandra Bera said they had initially conducted a rapid cholera test. After the disease was confirmed they sent further samples to the SSKM Hospital and the Beliaghata ID Hospital in Kolkata for further confirmation. Meanwhile, the public health engineering department was disinfecting water bodies in the village. The state government also sent a medical team to the village on Monday. (UNI)
Maoist posters found in Purulia ahead of CM’s visit
Purulia(WB): Fifty Maoist posters calling to observe the Martyrs’ week were on Monday found in Bandwan area of Purulia ahead of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s visit to the district, official sources said. The posters, seeking people’s support for the Martyrs’ Week beginning today, were found in Chirudi area of Bandwan today morning, District Magistrate N Sudhir Kumar said. Security has been beefed up to foil attempts by the Maoists to create violence during the week and in view of the chief minister’s scheduled visit to the district on July 30 next, he said. Surveillance has been increased on the nine checkposts bordering the neighbouring state of Jharkhand, he said. Movement of outsiders to and from the district is also being monitored, he said. (PTI)
Five killed in Uttarakhand landslide, heavy rain alert
Lucknow/Dehradun: Five people were killed in a landslide in Uttarakhand and the meteorological department Monday warned of another round of incessant downpour within 48 hours. Heavy rain pounded the state 10 days back. The rain alert has been sounded for most areas of the state, including Nainital, Chamoli, Champawat, Uttarkashi and the state capital Dehradun. Following the warning, disaster management teams have been asked to be on standby. Officials have been asked to be “extra vigilant” in areas adjacent to rivers, many of which are in spate owing to the heavy rain that lashed the state July 16-17. A massive landslide in Pangla of the Dharchula area Sunday killed five of a family. The landslide was triggered by heavy rain in the region since Saturday night.(PTI)
