SHILLONG: The KHADC chief Ardent Basiawmoit has come down heavily on attackers of the KHADC staff while downplaying the questions raised by several quarters on the legality of the July 25 eviction drive.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Basaiawmoit said, “Whether we supposedly violated or did not violate the provision of the law, nobody has the right to assault the staff of the Council who were performing their duty”.

The owner of Nichol’s Roy building at GS Road, Iewduh Deoris Marbaniang had questioned the district council for violating the provision of the Council’s Administration of Justice Rules, 1953 while conducting drive against illegal business establishments.

“I do not think they have the right to assault our staff. Friday’s incident was a premeditated one,” Basaiawmoit said.

Basaiawmoit said that if they felt that the action of the Council was questionable, they could have raised the issue at an appropriate forum.

When asked if they had prepared the list of the goods which were seized during the eviction drive, KHADC CEM said that the seizure list was ready.

Meanwhile, the Executive Member in charge Trade Latiplang Kharkongor said that the district council has not violated any law and that the directive of the High Court related to the case of Deoris Marbaniang was in favour of KHADC and that granting of trading license could not be made within one month due to the non-submission of required documents.
