Ex-army man pays with his ear for his moustache

Patna: A retired army personnel had to pay with his ear in a tiff over his flowing moustache in rural Patna district, about 35 km from here. Ramanuj Verma’s left ear was cut off by two brothers Nanku and Bina Yadav, his friends and neighbours, with whom he shared drinks, station house officer (SHO) of Bihta police station Sanjit Kumar Sinha told PTI on Thursday. The two had been teasing Verma over his moustache and his passion for it for some time. According to a written complaint filed by Verma, he was on his way back home at Kauriya village from work, a job he had taken up since his retirement, on Monday evening when the quarrel broke out and the two brothers cut off his left ear with a sharp weapon. An FIR has been registered on the basis of written complaint by Verma, the SHO said. The man was rushed to a local hospital. The two brothers are absconding since the incident and search is on for them, Sinha added. (PTI)

5 killed, 16 injured in road accident

Udhampur (J&K):  Five persons were killed and 16 others injured, seven of them seriously, when a passenger bus skidded off the road and rolled down into a gorge in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. The bus, which was on its way from Udhampur to Khor Gali, skidded off the road and rolled down into deep gorge at Dubi Gali area in the district Wednesday night, they said. While four persons were killed on the spot, another succumbed to his injuries during treatment, they said adding, the injured have been hospitalised. (PTI)

Army celebrates 273rd anniversary of ‘Battle of Colochel’

Kanyakumari: Indian army celebrated the 273rd anniversary of ‘Battle of Colachel,’ — the highly revered war in Indian history, in which forces of erstwhile Kingdom of Travancore inflicted a crushing defeat upon the forces of Dutch East India Company, at the Victory Column (War Memorial) of Colachel in this district. At a colourful function organised by the Madras Regiment today, Brigadier Samir Salunke, Station Commander, Pangode Military Station (Trivandrum), District Collector Nagarajan, senior police officials and retired military officials laid wreaths at the Victory Column, followed by a military band display by the pipe band of the regiment. The event is held every year to mark the great victory of Travancore forces over a vastly superior European Naval Force (Dutch East India Company) on August 10, 1741. (PTI)

UP govt removes Advocate General

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has removed Advocate General (AG) Vinay Chandra Mishra from his post. “From July 29 Uttar Pradesh Governor has relieved Vinay Chandra Mishra, Advocate General, from his post,” said a notification issued by the state government on July 29. As per the notification Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has been authorised to select the new AG. Mishra, who was appointed as the AG following resignation of SP Gupta in November last year, said that if he would have been asked to resign, he would have done that on his own. Alleging conspiracy, Mishra said that he would clarify the situation before SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav. Mishra, who had held important posts in Allahabad High Court, hails from Etawah, the native place of Mulayam Singh Yadav. He has served as Chairman of Bar Council of India and president of Bar Council of Allahabad High Court for seven terms. (PTI)
One killed in clash over social post; curfew clamped in Khandwa
Khandwa(MP): Curfew was imposed early on Thurday in Khandwa after communal tension spread in the town over a post on a social networking site that allegedly hurt the feelings of a particular community and also led to the killing of a person, a police official said. Trouble began last evening when an objectionable post was uploaded on the social networking site that flared up communal tension in the town, Khandwa’s Superintendent of Police Manoj Sharma said. Enraged over the post, a group of unidentified persons allegedly stabbed to death a 30-year-old youth following which tension gripped the town, leading to clashes between two groups. Police fired 10 rounds of teargas shells in Mohghat police station area and opened fire in the air thrice in Kotwali area to control the violent mob, the SP said. Two persons, including a police constable, were injured in the violence, police said. Later in the evening, police imposed prohibitory orders under section 144 in the town to control the situation and imposed indefinite curfew at around 4 AM today, he said. Division Commissioner Sanjay Dube and Inspector General Vipin Maheshwari reached the town from Indore last evening to monitor the situation. A case of murder was registered against unidentified persons in Mohghat police station, the SP said adding that additional force has been called for deployment in the sensitive area. The situation is under control at present, he added. (PTI)
