Lummawbah locality fencing row

SHILLONG: KHADC Chairperson Teilinia Thangkhiew has threatened to lodge a complaint with President of India Pranab Mukherjee against the Army authorities for violating a 2007 agreement that the Army would not fence various portion of Lummawbah locality Kythup, the water source and also the local play ground.
As per the agreement signed on May 3, 2007, the Army represented by then 101 Area Station Commander Brig. R.G. Ghatpande and Lummawbah Dorbar Shnong led by former Mylliem legislator Pynshai M. Syiem had reached a pact that the Army would not fence various portion of Lummawbah locality including the water source and the playground.
“If they fail to respect the agreement, I would not hesitate to lodge a complaint with the President of India,” Thangkhiew said after her meeting with the Chief of Staff of  101 Area, Major Gen L. Padmanabhan here on Thursday.
According to Thangkhiew, both the water source as well as the playground was crucial to the locality.
Earlier, former legislator Pynshai M. Syiem had dashed a letter to Union Defence Minister Arun Jaitley raising the issue of fencing of the Lummawbah locality by the Army authorities.
“The fence put up by the Army is nothing less than the Great Wall of China”, he had written in the letter.
The former MLA had also expressed his disappointed that the State authorities had not done anything to prevent the fencing by the Army authorities.
