NONGPOH: A few days after the KSU, North Khasi Hills District Unit and land owners halted the construction of Umtrew Hydro Electric Project in Byrnihat, the Union on Friday issued a month’s deadline to MeECL to pay compensation to the affected landowners.

The decision was taken by the KSU along with the land owners following an inconclusive meeting with the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) in Nongpoh.

Speaking to The Shillong Times here after the meeting, KSU, NKHD general secretary alleged that the press statement issued by the MeCEL public relation officer (PRO), Elias Lyngdoh stating that the department had not used public land for the project is completely untrue.

“The department has started earth cutting on a land belonging to one Sahnam Diengdoh,” the KSU leader said.

The land owners and the KSU leaders also expressed their concern over the clarification of the MeECL that the compensation money of Rs 70 lakh had been released to the Office of the Deputy Commissioner and it is the duty of the DC to release the same to the land owners.
