Man arrested for raping, filming 10-year-old daughter

Panaji: A 32-year-old man has been arrested for raping his 10-year-old daughter and filming it on his mobile phone, police said on Saturday. The victim said her father raped her several times over the last few years and on many occasions also filmed the act, according to an FIR. The father is a resident of Assnora, a hinterland town, 20 kms north of Panaji. Police officer Sandhya Gupta said the accused has been arrested and booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children Sexual Offences Act. (IANS)

Elderly couple murdered on suspicion of witchcraft

Bhubaneswar: A 22-year-old man was arrested in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district for hacking an elderly couple to death on suspicion of witchcraft, police said on Saturday. The incident took place at Dhanusahi village, over 300 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, on Friday but came to light after the accused confessed to the crime at a police station. Police officer Naba Kishor Das said the accused, Bira Singh Bari, suspected Ankula Purti, 65, and his wife Mukta, 60, of practicing witchcraft following the death of his two minor brothers and one sister in recent years. Finding the couple alone at home and sleeping, he hacked them to death with an axe, Das said. Police have arrested the accused and seized the axe, he said. (IANS)

CBI registers case against Syndicate Bank CMD

New Delhi: The CBI has registered a bribery case against S.K. Jain, chairman and managing director of state-owned Syndicate Bank, an official said on Saturday. The allegation pertains to Jain asking for a bribe to extend credit facilities to certain companies, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) official said. The official added that simultaneous raids at 20 places across Delhi, Bangalore, Bhopal and Mumbai have been conducted. “The bribe amount of Rs. 50 lakh has also been recovered. So far, the searches have led to recoveries of several asset papers and incriminating documents,” the official said. (IANS)

Three collegians drown in choppy sea at Juhu beach

Mumbai: Three collegians hailing from the neighbouring Thane district drowned in the choppy sea at Juhu Beach late Friday night. A group of 11 students, including two girls of Gyan Vidhya Mandir college, Thane, had come down to Juhu beach and all ventured into the sea for a swim, police said here on Saturday. The lifeguard at the spot asked them not to venture into the sea and the group came out at the first warning. However, three of them again ventured into sea and were washed away by the strong currents. Out of three, two were fished out by the fire brigade late Friday night, and one was fished out on Saturday morning. The deceased were identified as Arnikesh Yadav (16), Divakar Pandey (16) and Sanjeev Yadav (19), sources added. (UNI)

Six decomposed bodies found in UP canal

Lucknow: Six decomposed bodies, including that of a woman and three children, have been found in a car submerged in a canal in Uttar Pradesh’s Etawah district, police said on Saturday. The incident took place in Jaswantnagar. The deceased have all been identified as a family from Kanpur who had ventured on a pilgrimage on July 27 but had gone missing after a day. The car’s roof was on Saturday spotted in the canal. The railings of a bridge were also found broken. Divers were pressed into service after which the six badly decomposed bodies were recovered from the car. (IANS)
