Two HNLC extortionists in police net

SHILLONG: The Special cell of East Khasi Hills police has arrested two persons for demanding Rs 1 lakh from a person of Laitumkhrah.

Informing this here on Wednesday, Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, M Kharkrang said that one person from Laitumkhrah had received an SMS from a mobile (8259067234) demanding Rs 1 lakh from him and the caller, who claimed to be an HNLC cadre, asked him to deliver the amount at 7th Mile on August 4.

The person from whom the demand was made immediately approached police and on Tuesday night, the Special Cell arrested one Willbok Lyngdoh Marshillong (21) from Lumparing and seized the mobile phone which was used to make the demand.

Based on his leads, police also apprehended his accomplice identified as Sylvester Marwein (32) of Mawshubuit.

The duo, who have been awarded five-day police custody by a local court on Wednesday, confessed before police that they were HNLC workers.

“We will not allow the HNLC to raise its ugly head in East Khasi Hills again,” the SP said.

Kharkrang , meanwhile, asked people to come forward and lodge a complaint with police against those people who are extorting by claiming to be members of some groups.

“It has come to the knowledge of police that some persons, claiming to be members of some groups, are collecting money from various shopping establishments of the city,” he said adding people should not pay money to any one and shopkeepers should ask for written approval from the Deputy Commissioner from those person who collect money.
