‘Proceedings on damage suit may continue ex parte’

SHILLONG: Despite being served notices through dailies, only two out of the 12 pro-ILP pressure groups – Civil Society Women’s Organisation and All India Garo Union – attended the hearing pertaining to the Rs.31 crore damage suit on Friday.

Speaking to media persons after the hearing, Government lawyer Satendra Kumar said that the case will proceed ex parte if other defendants do not appear before the Court.

In the next hearing, the process of suggesting issues, filing of documents and evidence will follow. The next date for the hearing has not been finalized as of now.

The Special Court was constituted by the Government after the State witnessed large-scale damages to public and private properties estimated by the Government to be over Rs.31 crore during the series of agitations called by the pressure groups demanding implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state to check influx.

Altogether 86 cases were registered against the 12 pressure groups during the agitations that lasted for over four months out of which charge sheets were filed in 73 of the cases.
