Three convicts escape from jail, superintended suspended
Kolkata: Three convicts escaped from the Alipore Correctional Home in the early hours on Friday following which the jail superintendent and two guards were suspended.
“I have suspended the Jail superintendent Chiitaranjan Ghorai and an inquiry has been initiated. Two guards have also been suspended. We feel it was negligence of duty on their part. Let the inquiry report come out,” Jail Minister Haider Aziz Safwi said.
ADG, Prison, Adhir Sharma said that Qutubuddin Laskar, Shamim Haldar and Azim Mistry escaped from Cell No 8 at around 3.30 AM by cutting the rods and scaling wall post No 7 by using water pipe and ‘lungi’.
They escaped at around 3.30 AM, he said, adding a manhunt has been launched. After the incident came to light, the minister went to Alipore Correctional Home to look into the security aspect. (PTI)
Screening for Ebola at Mangalore airport
Mangalore: Health officials at Mangalore International Airport would begin screening passengers at arrival from Saturday to detect persons who contracted highly contagious ebola virus that has wreaked havoc in African countries.
Speaking to reporters at government-run Wenlock hospital here, State Health Minister U T Khader appealed to the public to postpone all journeys to the ebola infected countries.
The screening was as per the direction of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to airports across the country, he said. Precautionary measures would be taken to guard the medical team being set up for this purpose at MIA from the virus.
Meanwhile, in an official statement, the District Health Officer H S Shivakumar said the Ministry of External Affairs had issued directions to screen Indians returning from Liberia following outbreak of ebola virus.
He said the facilities set up at the airport two months ago, to screen those suspected with MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) would be utilised to screen passengers for suspected ebola fever. (PTI)
Farmers’ plight in Vidarbha, human trafficking raised in LS
New Delhi: A number of issues ranging from a policy to deal with the problem of missing children in the country to a loan waiver for farmers in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra were raised in Lok Sabha on Friday.
BJP member Birendra Singh raised the issue of human trafficking during Zero Hour saying 1,77,660 children have been missing between 2009 to 2011 of which only 1,22,190 have been found.
Out of the 55,000 missing children, 35,615 are minor girls, he said making a strong plea for making the National Human Rights Commission and National Commission for Protection of Children’s Rights more pro-active.
Ramdas Tadas (BJP) called for a Rs 1,500 crore loan waiver to farmers in parts of Vidarbha which has witnessed a spate of suicides due to growing indebtedness.
P Karunakaran (CPI-M) sought a ban on the use of Endosulphan pesticide.
He said the poisonous pesticide has led to 500 deaths in Kerala and has also affected neighbouring parts of Karnataka.
Kamla Devi Patle (BJP) made a strong plea that various power projects coming up at the power hub at Jangjir-Champa should fulfil promises given by them to the locals including in the matter of employment and other welfare measures. (PTI)
