Urban Affairs dept to address hawkers’ plight

SHILLONG: The Urban and Municipal Affairs Department will address the issue of plight of hawkers who are frequently evicted from commercial hubs of the city.

Urban Affairs Minister, Ampareen Lyngdoh told reporters on Friday that the department will address the issue with the co-ordination of the KHADC.

Ampareen said she was aware that when non indigenous hawkers are evicted from one place, the indigenous hawkers are allowed to carry on with the business on the same spot, which according to the Minister needs to be sorted out since there is no difference between the two.

The State Government has already proposed the street vendors (protection of livelihood and regulation of street vending bill) to address the issue.
