Shalom M’laya moves to ensure peace in GH

TURA: In the context of growing militancy and unlawful activities the general public of Garo Hills under the banner of Shalom Meghalaya have decided to take up various activities to strengthen and sustain peace in Garo Hills.

Shalom Meghalaya is a joint initiative of the Catholic Church and Garo Baptist Church with various other faiths as its stakeholders.

As a preparatory programme, an inter-religious candle light prayer service will be held on August 16 at different locations all over Tura and around 30 locations in the entire Garo Hills.

The programme which will stretch throughout the year initiating a mass movement for peace and prosperity will be inaugurated on August 17 at 2 pm at MP Stadium, Tura, in which leaders from all major religions will address the gathering on the need for peace.

A motor rally for peace which will tour the entire Garo Hills will also be flagged off on the same day. The inaugural programme is expected to be attended by 15,000 thousand peace loving citizens from all over Garo Hills.

Through its various interventions like public gatherings and prayers meetings to instill hope and confidence, distribution of pamphlets containing causes and effects of militancy, pledge and prayer for peace with an appeal to militants, inter-religious prayer meetings, outreach through press and media, signature campaigns of at least one lakh people that will be sent to the President of India seeking security of life and property and setting up of counseling centres for safe surrender of militants, Shalom Meghalaya aims at restoring peace in Garo Hills.
