Rooney named Manchester United captain by Van Gaal

London: Wayne Rooney has been named Manchester United captain by new manager Louis van Gaal, the club announced. The 28-year-old England striker succeeds Nemanja Vidic after the Serbia defender left United at the end of last season to join Inter Milan. “For me it’s the choice of captain is always very important,” said Van Gaal in a club statement issued after United’s 2-1 friendly win against Valencia at Old Trafford on Tuesday. “Wayne has shown a great attitude towards everything he does.” the Dutchman explained. “He is a great inspiration to the younger members of the team and I believe he will put his heart and soul into his captaincy role.” Rooney, who could now also become captain of England following Steven Gerrard’s retirement from international football, said, “It is a huge honour for me — and for my family — to be named captain of this great club. “It is a role I will perform with great pride. Team spirit has always been very high in our dressing room and I am very grateful to the manager for the faith he has shown in me.” Van Gaal, who formally took charge at Old Trafford last month after guiding the Netherlands to third place at the World Cup, said Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher, whom he labelled a “natural leader” would be the team’s vice-captain and lead the side in Rooney’s absence. France’s Franck Ribery ends international career

BERLIN: France winger Franck Ribery is ending his career with the national team to focus on his club and family, the player, who missed this year’s World Cup through injury, said on wednesday. ‘I am stopping,’ the 31-year-old told German magazine Kicker in an interview to be published tomorrow. ‘I realised that this moment has come.’ Ribery, a 2006 World Cup finalist who was Europe’s player of the year in 2013, said he wanted to make way for a younger generation of players. ‘I want to focus on my family and fully concentrate on my work at Bayern Munich and make way in the national team for the many young and exciting players,’ he said. ‘One has to know when to stop. I have experienced so much and now is the time for others to come forward. You could see at the World Cup that we should have no concerns about France’s future.’ Ribery, who won 81 caps and scored 16 international goals, battled to be fit for the World Cup but despite intensive treatment he failed to make it to Brazil, where France lost to Germany in the quarter-finals. ‘There were highs and lows but now is the time to start a new chapter in my life,’ he said. Sasikiran keeps India in hunt for historic podium finish

Tromso (Norway): Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran guided Indian men to a creditable 2.5-1.5 victory over Germany in the 10th and penultimate round to stay in contention for a podium finish at the 41st Chess Olympiad here. Sasikiran’s 48-moves win against Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu not only raised visions of a best-ever Indian finish but also set the tone for what could be the first ever Olympiad medal for India. Nisipeanu, an import from Romania in to the German team, was at sea with white pieces. Playing the Grunfeld, Sasikiran patiently outplayed his higher-rated opponent. It was a Bishop and pawn endgame wherein an extra pawn help the Indian garner full point. At the top of the table, Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi held GM Arkadij Naiditsch to a draw with black pieces. Negi was slightly off colour for major part of the game but continued to fight till he achieved what was the most important half point for India. (PTI)
