SHILLONG: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has extended time for the new committee headed by MS Rao, Principal Secretary, Forest, Meghalaya government to submit its report on the assessment of extracted coal and the ways of transporting the coal without any environmental hazards.

Earlier during the August 1 hearing in Shillong, the NGT had asked the new Committee to submit its report within two weeks.

However, in a fresh order issued on August 12, the NGT bench said that by August 30 the Committee should submit the report.

The order said that on receipt of application from Rao, the NGT decided to extend time to the Committee to submit the report by August 30.

The NGT, during its hearing on August 1, had come down heavily on the first committee for its inability to carry out its work as ordered by the Tribunal.

After scrapping the committee headed by Director of Mines, RP Marak, for its inability to comply with NGT directive, the NGT further asked the State Government to constitute a fresh committee to complete the task entrusted with the previous committee.

The new committee consists of Principal Secretary, Forest MS Rao, Additional Chief Secretary KS Kropha, Dr SS Bala, a senior Scientist of the Central Pollution Board, P Gupta, Member Secretary, the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board and Prof Mohmmed Javed of IIT, Guwahati.
