HILLONG: Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has said that the state government will stop further construction of buildings which are beyond the prescribed limit of ground floor and three more flours (G+3 buildings) in residential areas as per the interim order of the Division Bench of the High Court of Meghalaya.

Lyngdoh on Sunday said that the department will send notices to all the building owners to stop further constructions of buildings which are more than G+3 in the residential areas.

The department is likely to have a discussion on the matter on Monday.

According to Lyngdoh, the department will file an appeal against the interim order of the case.

Meanwhile, MUDA is in dilemma over the interim order of Division Bench of the High Court of Meghalaya to seal all the under construction of sky rise buildings in Shillong.

The worry is that it was the same MUDA which had granted permission to construct the sky rise buildings allegedly in violation to the norms which according to the court is ground floor plus three more floors.

It was on April 11 that the Court in an interim order stayed the construction of sky rise buildings beyond the permissible limit of ground floor and three more floors.

Even after the interim order, there was no stop to the construction of the high rise building.

In the last week’s order, the Division Bench of the High Court of Meghalaya after examining a counter affidavit filed by MUDA in response to the interim order observed that there are some buildings which are still not safe in Shillong which are prone to earthquakes and other natural calamities.

MUDA sources, however, admitted that there were some high rise buildings which pose risks if there are any natural calamities

The Court while asking MUDA to file additional affidavit with the action taken to check the sky rise building fixed the next hearing for September 1.
