Proposal sent to Delhi: Ampareen
SHILLONG: Incessant rains in the city over the past week have thoroughly exposed the dismal drainage system of the Pine City.
With rainfall recordings crossing the three-figure mark last week, several junctions and important landmarks in the city were inundated while Polo Market and its adjoining areas were completely under the cover of water.
Water clogging in small patches was evident throughout the Shillong, and accompanied by dirt and mud, it created great inconvenience for the residents.
However, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh sought to downplay the issue, saying that department has re-enforced drainage project in the city, even though she admitted that the drainage system of the entire city could not be covered.
The department is now counting on the Union Government to sanction a State Government proposal on improvement of the city’s drainage system, she said.
The Minister also informed that she had raised the matter with Union Minister for Urban Development, Venkaiah Naidu, who gave her a patient hearing.
“We had sent proposals under the JNNURM Phase-II to revamp the drainage system but if it is scrapped we hope to get the necessary sanction under other schemes,” Lyngdoh said.
