HC interim order silent on commercial buildings: Ampareen

SHILLONG: The State Urban Affairs department will soon propose an amendment to the building bye-laws.

The issue (amendment to the building bye-laws) was discussed in the meeting of the Urban Affairs department here on Monday.

The meeting was convened to discuss the recent interim order of the Meghalaya High Court where in the Court prohibited construction of building beyond fourth floor (G+ 3) in the state capital.

Later talking to reporters, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said that the Court order mentioned about residential buildings, “but it is silent as far as commercial buildings are concerned.”

“Our officers will ensure that no body violates the court order,” Lyngdoh said.

She informed that notices had been issued to several landowners in the city who are constructing buildings beyond the prescribed limit in the city.

“Ferndale Apartment located opposite to the State Secretariat has been issued three notices to stop further construction,” she added.

It may be mentioned that the department will file an appeal against the interim order very shortly.

It was on April 11 that the Court in an interim order stayed the construction of sky rise buildings beyond the permissible limit of ground floor and three more floors.

The Court while asking MUDA to file additional affidavit with the action taken to check the sky rise building fixed the next hearing for September 1.
