New outfit claims responsibility for Garo Hills unrest

SHILLONG: The State government has convened a meeting of all 24 legislators from Garo Hills to discuss the prevailing law and order situation in Garo Hills.

Confirming this, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said that after the meeting with the legislators to be held next week, the government would convene an all-party meeting to discuss the issue.

“We need to elicit suggestions and opinions on the matter from all concerned and the government is clear in its intent to work towards finding a solution to this problem,” Chief Minister said, adding, “the need of the hour is to comprehend the problems in totality and then concertedly work together to find a lasting solution.”

UPRA claims responsibility for GH unrest: Meanwhile, the United People’s Revolutionary Alliance (UPRA), a nascent militant outfit in trouble-torn Garo Hills has claimed responsibility for the current law and order crisis in the region revealing that it has had to resort to kidnappings, murders and other illegal activities in order to sustain itself.

Staking claim to various recent militant activities in the region the lesser known outfit blamed the ANVC leadership for their predicament accusing them of grabbing the lion’s share of the loot and leaving nothing for the lower rung cadres while they were comrades in the parent outfit.

“The current leaders of the ANVC have failed to hand over around Rs 2 lakh which was meant for us. We never had access to money obtained through tax or extortions from the traders of Garo Hills. The whole amount was grabbed by the leaders. We have been forced to desert our camp in Youth Hostel and fend for ourselves in the jungles,” the self styled West Garo Hills Commander who identified himself only as Chongkim said in a statement.
