SHILLONG: The State Community and Rural Development Department is keen on early implementation of the Bio-digester project to augment the Total Sanitation Campaign in Meghalaya, C&RD Director, Akashdeep, said.

He said that the project would promote scientific dumping of wastes and provide for construction of eco-friendly toilets in the State for which necessary funds have been provided.

It is learnt that the bio-digesters are being developed by the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA).

Meghalaya will be the first state in the North East to execute the project on a pilot basis. Construction of individual toilets is being funded under the Bharat Nirman Scheme.

Initially, the State Government wants to cover around 10,000 households in the State with bio-digester toilets.

A bio-digester is an anaerobic tank which digests organic material biologically. It is used to treat black water (human wastes) on site, eliminating pathogens and malignant bacteria, so that the treated water can be used for irrigation.
