Urban Affairs dept to discuss fare hike

SHILLONG: The Urban Affairs Department will hold a meeting on August 26 to discuss the growing opposition against the hike in fares of SPTS buses operating in and around the city.

Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Monday said that the department is seized of the concerns raised by the people on the recent hike of bus fares and the department will thoroughly discuss the matter.

Fares upto 3 km has been raised to Rs.5, upto 8 km (Rs.10), upto 13 km (Rs.15) and beyond 13 km the rate is Rs.20 within specific routes of Shillong.

In view of the increase in fuel and maintenance costs, the fares of the Shillong Supplementary Public Transport Service (maxi cabs) has also been increased from August 1. Fare upto a distance of 8 km has been fixed at Rs.10 and for distances beyond 8 km the rate has been fixed at Rs.20
