Yuki, Sanam win opening qualifiers in US Open

Chandigarh: Yuki Bhambri and Sanam Singh, both of India, won their opening qualifying round matches in singles of the US Open 2014 in New York.

After beating Lauynas of Lauynas in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, Delhi-based Yuki Bhambri described it as ‘good solid win today’. In the next round Yuki is pitted against McGee of Ireland.

Yuki Bhambri won 58 total points against 44 by Lauynas who made five unforced errors. Yuki committed two unforced errors. He also committed two double faults while his opponent had five double faults on his scorecard.

Former Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association trainee Sanam Singh also moved into second round of qualifying competitions after disposing of the challenge of Flavio Cipolla of Italt 6-1, 7-6 and will next face Andreas Beck of Germany.

However, Somdev Devvaraman lost to Emesto Escobedo of the United States 3-6, 2-6. (UNI)
