Jaintia Hills youth clears prestigious ARS exam

JOWAI: Jaintia Hills region of the State has, over the years, produced several IAS, IPS and IFS officers who have served or are continuing to serve the state and the country, but it has now earned the unique distinction of producing not one but two Agriculture Research Scientists.
In addition to Dr. Heiplanmi Rymbai and Clarisa Challam, both of whom are Agriculture Research Scientists, Hammylliende Talang, who has specialized in Fruits Science, has successfully cleared the Agriculture Research Scientist Examination, 2012, conducted by the Agriculture Scientist Recruitment Board, New Delhi.
The ASRB, established on November 1, 1973, is an independent recruitment agency that conducts the examination for appointment of Agriculture Research Scientists.
Talang, a resident of Shilliang Myntang village in West Jaintia Hills is the son of Pynskhem Talang and Skhemmon Biam.
Congratulating Talang for his achievement, Dr. Rymbai informed that there are only 10 ARS in Meghalaya in the field – eight from Khasi-Jaintia region and two from Garo Hills. Dr. Rymbai has taught in Gujarat University of Agro Science is presently serving in ICAR, Umiam.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, Talang informed that he is only the second person from Jaintia Hills to have come out successful in the ARS Examination so far.
Talang completed his Pre-University from Kiang Nangbah Government College with a first division in 2005 and joined the B.Sc. Horti course at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswa Vidyalaya in Nadia, West Bengal through the State Quota. After his graduation, he continued with his Masters Degree at the same institution and was awarded a gold medal on successful completion of the course.
Talang is currently pursuing his PhD which he expects to receive by November this year.
On the occasion of Independence Day, the Shilliang Myntang Village Dorbar felicitated Talang for his achievement along with other meritorious students of the village.
The village headman congratulated Talang on his achievement and urged the students to follow his footsteps in order to be able to contribute to the society.
